Palliser Furniture Acquired by MotoMotion: A Retailer’s Perspective After 22 Years
HTmarket.com has been a Palliser Furniture retailer for roughly 22 years. We have sold Palliser because it was a respected North American furniture brand with a long history, strong name recognition, and a reputation built over decades.
That is why the recent news that Palliser was acquired by MotoMotion was surprising — and frankly, disappointing in how it has been handled from the dealer side.
According to Home News Now, Palliser was purchased by MotoMotion in a transaction completed May 29, 2026. The article reported that MotoMotion is part of China-based Changzhou Jiangxin Duju Smart Home Co., Ltd., also known as HHC Group, and has manufacturing operations in Vietnam, China, and Cambodia. CBC also reported that the sale ended more than 80 years of local ownership for the Winnipeg-based furniture company.
For a brand with Palliser’s history, that is a major change.
The Problem for Retailers and Customers
The biggest issue is not simply that Palliser was acquired. Companies get sold. The furniture business is difficult, and the current housing market has been in a deep freeze. Higher interest rates, weak home sales, tariff issues, material costs, and soft consumer demand have made this a brutal environment for many furniture manufacturers and retailers.
The bigger issue is communication.
From our perspective as a long-time dealer, information has been slow and incomplete. We finally received a call last Friday. Until then, we were left trying to manage customer expectations without clear direction.
We have now been told to cancel our existing Palliser orders and re-enter them so they can be made in Vietnam, as we understand the Canada and Mexico production tied to those orders is no longer available to us.
That creates a real problem.
We currently have three affected Palliser customers. One order is fairly new, so that one can likely be re-entered without too much disruption. Another order is about four months old. The most difficult situation is a customer who has been waiting close to a year.
That is not a small inconvenience. That is a customer who trusted the brand, trusted the dealer, and waited patiently for a custom furniture order.
This Does Not Feel Like a Normal Strategic Acquisition
Publicly, the acquisition has been described as a continuation of a long-standing partnership. Home News Now reported that MotoMotion had been a long-time supplier and strategic partner to Palliser, and that Palliser executives framed the deal as a way to support the future growth of the brand.
That may be the official version.
But from where we sit, this does not feel like a clean, well-planned strategic acquisition where dealers were briefed, orders were protected, and customers were given a clear path forward.
Industry reports before and after the acquisition pointed to liquidity issues, supplier payment problems, disrupted material flow, and delayed orders. Furniture Today also noted that many observers viewed the transaction as MotoMotion stepping in to help a struggling customer, although the article also presented the possibility that MotoMotion sees opportunity in a difficult market.
That distinction matters.
If this was truly a strategic acquisition, then dealer communication should have been organized, proactive, and customer-focused. Instead, from our experience, dealers have been left to clean up the mess with limited information.
The China and Vietnam Angle Is Hard to Ignore
One of the more astonishing parts of this story is that Palliser — a long-time Canadian furniture manufacturer — is now owned by a China-based company with manufacturing operations in Vietnam, China, and Cambodia.
That would be notable under any circumstances. It is even more notable because Palliser had been associated with Canadian trade actions involving upholstered furniture imports from China and Vietnam. Wood Industry reported that Palliser was the complainant in Canada’s 2020 trade investigation into certain upholstered domestic seating from China and Vietnam.
So, from a dealer and consumer perspective, the optics are hard to miss: a North American manufacturer that once stood as a domestic furniture brand is now owned by a company tied directly to the overseas manufacturing base that has reshaped the furniture industry.
That does not automatically mean the product will be bad. Vietnam can produce good furniture. China can produce good furniture. The issue is not geography alone.
The issue is trust, transparency, order continuity, and whether Palliser’s identity as a North American custom furniture brand survives this transition.
We Still Want Palliser to Succeed
To be clear, HTmarket.com still wants to be a Palliser dealer if the company can stabilize operations, support existing customers, and communicate clearly with dealers.
We are not writing Palliser off.
But after 22 years of representing the brand, we expected better communication. Dealers should not have to chase rumors, wait for vague updates, and then be told to cancel and re-enter customer orders that have already been in the system for months.
Customers do not care about corporate restructuring, ownership changes, factory transitions, or supplier relationships. They care about the furniture they ordered.
And dealers are the ones stuck explaining the situation.
What Palliser and MotoMotion Need to Do Now
If Palliser and MotoMotion want to keep long-time dealers, they need to provide clear answers immediately:
- What happens to every open order?
- Which orders will be honored as originally placed?
- Which orders must be re-entered?
- What are the new realistic lead times?
- What products are still available?
- What factories are producing which lines?
- What happens to warranty support and parts?
- Will Palliser remain a true custom furniture program, or is it becoming an import-driven brand?
- Will dealers receive consistent updates instead of scattered phone calls?
- How will customers who have already waited months be protected?
Those are not unreasonable questions. They are basic dealer support questions.
Final Thoughts
Palliser has been around for more than 80 years. HTmarket.com has been a dealer for 22 of those years. We want the brand to survive, and we would like to continue offering Palliser products if the new ownership can support the dealer network properly.
But the way this transition has been handled so far has been poor.
The furniture industry is tough right now. Nobody denies that. But difficult conditions do not excuse poor communication with retailers and customers who already have money, time, and trust invested in open orders.
Palliser and MotoMotion now have an opportunity to prove this acquisition is more than a rescue deal or production shift. They need to show dealers that the Palliser brand still stands for reliability, support, and long-term value.
Right now, the next move is theirs. Hopefully it’s a positive.
