A dedicated home theater should feel different from the rest of the house before you even walk into the room. That is why we have expanded the HT Design line with a new collection of custom home theater doors designed specifically for theater rooms, screening rooms and high-end media spaces.
For years, most theater projects have focused heavily on seating, projection, sound, lighting and acoustic treatments. The entrance often ended up being a standard residential door that did not really match the rest of the room.
Our new custom theater doors are designed to change that.
Rather than simply decorating an existing door, these are complete custom-built theater doors that allow the entrance to become part of the overall room design.
Four Distinctive Home Theater Door Styles
The new HT Design door collection currently includes four different designs, ranging from traditional theater styling to cleaner contemporary looks.
HT Design Three Panel Home Theater Door
The Three Panel design combines upholstered sections with finished wood trim for a more architectural appearance. It works particularly well in theaters using wood columns, cabinetry, wall treatments or traditional millwork.
HT Design Tacked Button Home Theater Door
This design uses upholstered panels with decorative tacked buttons for a classic cinema appearance. It is a good choice for customers looking for a traditional upholstered theater entrance without a heavily tufted design.
HT Design Tufted Home Theater Studded Door
For a more dramatic entrance, the tufted studded design combines upholstered detailing with decorative metal studs around the perimeter of the door. The decorative hardware gives the entrance a stronger traditional theater appearance.
HT Design Diamond Tufted Door
The Diamond Tufted Door provides a more decorative upholstered appearance and works especially well in theaters where the entrance is intended to make a strong visual statement.
Single or Double Home Theater Doors
Every theater is different, so the doors can be configured for either a single entrance or a double-door entrance.
A single door is the practical choice for most residential theaters and can be ordered in widths from 24 to 36 inches.
For larger rooms, theater lobbies and more elaborate installations, double doors create a much more dramatic cinema-style entrance.
Doors are available in both 80-inch and 96-inch heights.
26 Upholstery Colors
The upholstery is another major part of the design.
Customers can choose from 26 vinyl colors, including traditional theater colors such as cinema red, burgundy, black and dark brown, along with grays, oranges, tans and other neutral colors.
That makes it possible to coordinate the entrance with HT Design theater seating, carpeting, wall panels, draperies and other elements of the room.
Theater Hardware Makes a Difference
Hardware can completely change the character of a theater entrance.
Customers can select a traditional architectural pull handle or use a film-reel door pull for a more unmistakable movie-theater look.
Available hardware finishes include stainless steel, matte black, gold and antique brass.
Optional push plates and kick plates can also be added to complete the entrance and help protect the door in areas that receive frequent use.
Designed as Part of the Theater
One of the reasons we developed this program is that a theater door should not really be selected in isolation.
The door can coordinate with the seating leather, wall colors, carpeting, columns, cabinetry, acoustic treatments and other finishes throughout the room.
In a well-designed theater, the entrance becomes the first visual cue that you are entering a completely different space.
For some projects that means a restrained black upholstered door with matte-black hardware. For others it might mean a red tufted double door with decorative studs and film-reel handles.
There is a lot of room between those two extremes.
Complete Door or Upholstered Door Panel?
We also offer upholstered theater door panels for customers who already have an existing door that they want to keep.
There is an important difference between the two products.
An upholstered door panel is essentially a decorative treatment installed over an existing door.
The new HT Design custom theater doors are complete doors designed and built specifically for the project.
If you are building a new theater or doing a substantial remodel, the complete custom door provides considerably more flexibility because the size, configuration, upholstery, finishes and hardware can all be selected together.
What About Sound Isolation?
A common question with theater doors involves soundproofing.
The door is important, but no decorative theater door by itself determines the sound isolation of the room.
Good sound isolation requires looking at the entire opening as a system, including the door, frame, perimeter seals, bottom seal, surrounding wall construction and installation.
The upholstered exterior is primarily about design and creating the finished theater entrance.
The Theater Starts at the Door
Home theaters have become much more sophisticated over the past twenty years.
Customers are investing in better seating, larger screens, immersive audio, acoustic treatments, specialty carpeting, lighting and architectural details.
It makes little sense to finish all of that work and then enter the theater through an ordinary bedroom-style door.
Our new custom theater door program gives builders, designers and homeowners another way to carry the theater design all the way to the entrance.
You can compare the door designs, available sizes, upholstery choices and hardware options in our Custom Home Theater Door Guide.
